attendeeGood morning. Welcome to AfreecaTV live conference aka ALCON. Very good morning to you. I'm BJ Kim [indiscernible]. Thank you. ALCON is open to anyone who's interested in AfreecaTV. However, please understand that since it's related to our earnings, only fund managers and analysts can ask a question via chat window. Today, we're joined by Mr. Chan-Yong Jung, our CEO; Mr. Kim Joon-sung, our Vice President; and Ms. Kim Jiyeon, Head of IR. First of all, could you all greet those who've joined us?
Chan-Yong Jung
executiveGood morning. My name is Chan-Yong Jung. It's already year 2020. The January has passed and now we're in February. First of all, I would like to thank our new BJ, who joined us this year. So we'll cover last year and Q4 today. But I want to assure you that we are growing definitely, and we have some growth momentums that we'll definitely explain.
Unknown Attendee
attendeeWell it's my first time, and I'm really excited. How about you, Gene?
Joon-Sung Kim
executiveGood morning. I'm Gene. Thank you very much for joining us despite your busy schedule. I look forward to great questions from you.
Unknown Attendee
attendeeHow about you, Ms. Kim.
Kim Jiyeon
executiveGood morning. I'm Kim Jiyeon. So this is -- we're going to cover the whole year 2019. So I look forward to many questions.
Unknown Attendee
attendeeThank you very much. Okay. So how -- let's move on to the briefing. What's the order of business this morning?
Kim Jiyeon
executiveFirst, let me briefly go over the earnings highlights for the -- 2019 and then take your questions.
Unknown Attendee
attendeeOkay. So let's move on to the earnings report. Ms. Kim, take it over.
Kim Jiyeon
executiveSlide, please. Here are the business highlights. In 2019, AfreecaTV focused on solidifying our existing business while building the basis for new ones. Thanks for our continuous efforts in making unique business models suitable for the new environment, our branded contents grew continuously and also built a foundation for growth as an open API and engaging platform by launching diverse services that expand the VOD services. Most of all, we've poured a lot of effort to ensure that BJs also grow with us since they are critical to content creation and community building. By making the operation of newbies zone a more sophisticated to foster new BJs, they received all the necessary support to take root and grow in our ecosystem. Also, we worked closely with existing BJs to create new source of income by various measures, such as supporting them with content production and expanding participation in branded contents. Furthermore, we newly launched User Clip, which is user engagement service, where any user can make a short video of an AfreecaTV broadcast and share instantly. Engaging users like this ensures not only stronger community, but also a solid basis for further growth as an open API platform. Also, we invested in eSports. To ensure a more stable eSports League operation, we established our own arena, AfreecaTV Coliseum. Along with the existing FreecUP studio, it is equipped with everything that will make it a leading eSports arena in Korea. It certainly was a fruitful year that celebrates many feeds, all thanks to your support. Now let me brief you on the earnings that reflect such business results. The total revenue of Q4 was KRW 43.4 billion, recording minus 3% growth Q-on-Q, but 16% growth Y-o-Y. Revenues from platform recorded minus 5% growth Q-o-Q, but 17% growth Y-o-Y. There were some changes in the fourth quarter that affected the revenues from payment system. First of all, PG Company used to handle the payments on KakaoPay, but the contract changed, therefore AfreecaTV manages this directly. For this reason, KakaoPay service stopped for 2 months. In addition, we noticed that the bad debt ratio for mobile micropayment was rising, so we increased the risk management baseline for payment, which in turn restricted payments of paying users with poor credits. In short, KakaoPay service 2 month-long suspension had an impact as well as the fact that users' payments were restricted after ratcheting up mobile micropayment risk management. However, these measures were taken only to maintain the health of our ecosystem in the long run, and KakaoPay came back in service in mid-December, operating normally ever since. On the other hand, advertisement revenue grew yet again, recording 8% Q-o-Q and 21% Y-o-Y. Even though platform advertisement decreased by 31% Q-o-Q, as the Lineage 2M preorder advertisement effect dissipated. Branded contents led the revenue growth in advertisement even during the low season for league production, recording 12% growth Q-o-Q and 18% Y-o-Y. In other advertisement, the revenues from G-Star and BJ awards sponsorship during the fourth quarter were reflected. The multi-platform revenue reflects the revenue from the 17 Open Studios operating nationwide. 14 Open Studio revenue was reflected in the Q3, and 3 were added in Q4. The yearly revenue of 2019 was KRW 167.9 billion, a 33% growth Y-o-Y. Revenues from platform and advertisement grew 28% and 49%, respectively. And multi-platform revenue grew tremendously by 75%, thanks to continuous expansion of Open Studios. Year 2019 was a remarkable year with high growth with advertisement revenue, especially branded content. Branded content, a new business model, has been tremendously effective and efficient for advertisers to expose their ad for a long period of time, continuously engaging users. Also, it provided BJs a new source of income aside from guests and, at the same time, relieved them from the burden of content production -- content development. We will continue to develop such effective advertisement products that will be beneficial for advertisers, BJs and users alike and contribute to a healthy ecosystem. Not only the usual game advertisers but also non-game advertisers are using branded content more and more. We foresee a continuous growth in year 2020 also. Next slide. The expense was about 32% decrease. And for the operating income, it recorded 16.8%. In the fourth quarter, the revenue decreased slightly, but there was the expense increase due to the event. The operating income in 2019 was KRW 36.7 billion, which is 35% increase Y-o-Y. And then also the income margin -- operating margin was 21.9% Y-o-Y and 0.5 percent point increase. Turning now to the operating expense. 2019 4Q operating expense posted KRW 36.1 billion, up 6% Q-o-Q, with the increase in ads revenue. 4Q's paying charge section saw a 6% increase Q-o-Q. In the Event section, G-Star participation and year-end BJ award cost around KRW 2.4 billion. On the other hand, as the game league season ended, content production expense dropped by 25% Q-o-Q. Operating expense for the year 2019 recorded KRW 131.1 billion, a 32% jump Y-o-Y. Compared to revenue, paying charge inched up slightly. That's because of the growth in the branded content revenue in the year 2019. Expense for content production also went up because we moved our stadium for PUBG League from Jamsil Open Studio to KR [indiscernible], which led to additional expense for new installation and operation. However, last year, we built AfreecaTV's Coliseum just for PUBG, which will allow us to enhance the level of our expertise in operating and broadcasting eSports league, and it will also help us reduce costs by eliminating the need to meet for installation and dismantling every time a game is held. In the Others section, with our bad debt ratio raised, bad debt expense also increased. There's no other section that saw an unusual increase in operating expense. The last slide is yearly financial statement. Please refer to it for your use. Thank you very much, everyone.
Unknown Attendee
attendeeThank you. [Operator Instructions] I was hoping to see questions here, but apparently, there isn't any. So let me ask questions that I've had in my mind for some time.
Unknown Attendee
attendeeWell, we have what's called a User Clip, a new service at AfreecaTV platform. Now the viewers can participate and engage, which helps us to expand the VOD service. What is the situation now? How is the business going?
Chan-Yong Jung
executiveWell, thank you for the question. With the new feature called User Clip, we now have 4,000 clips every day uploaded. And PV, the actual people that viewing this, is also increasing. So this User Clip feature is apparently helping our overall service. I can see that. But what we need right now is advance this User Clip. Let's say, you are a BJ, you're very versatile, you're a great singer. Whatever you do, you have to put it in 1 minute and 30 seconds. Sometimes this isn't enough time. Now you want to expand it to 5 minutes, which we can do. Or Ms. Kim, people might want to replay your video, and this is available for -- at the User Clip service. And it's not just cut. You can also add editing function into this. So User Clip itself is already great content in and of itself. So that's what we want to do in the near future.
Unknown Attendee
attendeeOkay. I can see that this User Clip and editing function is upgraded, and I was very happy to see that. All right. We still don't have any question.
Chan-Yong Jung
executiveWell, this is an earnings report, and I know, Ms. Kim, this is very new to you. Do you know the scale of the revenues of AfreecaTV?
Unknown Attendee
attendeeWell, I had no idea the scale of the business of AfreecaTV or how much of a growth it has shown, and I'm very surprised and very interested to find out about this all reports -- earnings reports and everything. This person -- user has sent us 50 Star Balloons. Thank you very much. [Operator Instructions] Now let's go back to the question of the VOD. I can see AfreecaTV is committed on growing the VOD business. Now -- we now have this terrestrial channel as well. Can you tell me the hurdles in your attempt to grow VOD?
Chan-Yong Jung
executiveYes, I think it's all about user experience. The VOD users are very used to the top platform, which is YouTube. And we need to at least match that experience, and it's not easy. I may not be accurate, but SMR is not exactly the same as YouTube. YouTube introduced it, but it's slightly different. So I need -- we need to set ourselves apart. This could be speed and the amount. YouTube, uploading takes some time, but User Clip, you can do it in real-time. And uploading on YouTube is just 1 click, but on the User Clip, you can -- we see 4,000 per day already, and this can expand to 10,000 and even more. So this means that for a user, this is a great motivation for the user stay on and use a VOD service here on AfreecaTV, not anywhere else. And the BJs videos and the contents that we have on AfreecaTV is the basis -- can be the basis. And when we have the portion in the pie, we can start from there to expand.
Unknown Attendee
attendeeThank you very much. I actually have more questions, but there is a question already.
Han Kyung Kim
analystI'm Kim Han Kyung from eBest Securities. I would like to see your guidance for this year's gift economy and ads business. And I would also like to know the onetime event impact in the 4Q?
Chan-Yong Jung
executiveYes, I can give you guidance for 2020. You asked for the 2 areas, one is the gift economy and the other is the ads business. I know I'm the CEO, but it's very difficult to predict. You know about this novel coronavirus, and this is very, very fleecy. It is -- what I want to say is that more than just predicting, our commitment is more important. We always said that the operating income should be around 20%, and that's our goal going forward. We have now a bigger pie. The scale has grown up. So the percent -- keeping the percentage means we need to see even grow -- much growth. But I believe that one-person media has not matured. It's only growing, early stage, I will tell you. So by the growth rate, either the ads or the gift economy or the total portion, I think we can grow by 15%. That's the target. Growth rate, 15%. Now 4Q's onetime impact, I cannot tell you for sure, but I -- given that we have rebounded a little bit in the first quarter of this year, I think there is some very temporary impact coming from December of last year.
Unknown Attendee
attendeeI'm so surprised. Yes, there's analyst, Kim Sung Eun from Macquarie. Very close to us.
Sung Eun Kim
analystI'm Kim Sung Eun from Macquarie Securities. ARPU trend since Q1, did it recover compared to Q4? What will drive ARPU growth in the coming year? And how -- so that's the first question. I think it recovered, right?
Kim Jiyeon
executiveThe revenue decrease in Q4 was not because of the ARPU, but the decrease in the paying users. And the reason why we had less paying user is that because of the micropayment RM was -- that became more restrictive, and also we had the KakaoPay issue. So those with low credit could not make a payment. So -- but still it's going on pretty well.
Sung Eun Kim
analystSo the second question was, how will you expand your user bases and paying users? What are your strategies?
Unknown Attendee
attendeeWell, can I add to the first question?
Chan-Yong Jung
executiveYou know what ARPU is? Oh, wow, you know.
Unknown Attendee
attendeeI studied. I did my homework.
Chan-Yong Jung
executiveSo it's daily pay by -- per person. So if it's in growth, in terms of the payment, when it's starting from the KRW 30,001 to now it's KRW 128,000, so 1 user spending the KRW 30,000 or KRW 50,000, if you think about that point, we -- I think we have been thinking about, will that even increase from then on? However, we're in a situation where the digital culture is there, and there's the loyalty also. So ARPU, I mean it's not going to increase automatically, but as long as we have a healthy cushion, so for example, BJ Kim Sung Eun, you have your own fans and you have your own system, then if that system works, then the ARPU will go up. There's definitely room to grow. To answer your second question, to expand user bases. The users who are already with us, they have reasons to come. They want to communicate with the BJs, and they want to see those contents. But those who did not come to us, we have to motivate them to come in. So we need something new, or we need to publicize what we already have. Like, for example, we have this good food and we want you to come and enjoy, or we have a new menu, so you have to come and join. The reason why we are expanding those user engagement services is to have those new inflow of users. And BJs also play a critical role here. For example, in special event like World Cup in sports or in game, in LCK, there are some onetime users who come in to consume those content. And in order to retain them, we need something new, something else. But those live services, until we have a strong community, it's very hard to retain those people who come in just for one event. So basically, those people come in to watch a match and they leave. So to address this, we need to have contents -- good contents in non-live contents. So I think that's the VOD. So for example, oh [indiscernible] BJ is very famous and I come into AfreecaTV and I look around for [indiscernible] but then he's not here and then I -- but then, if I come in here and if I look for [indiscernible] and if I have all these contents already created, then I will stay. And also, we have audio -- we're going to do an audio service also. So I think the video market and audio market are different, but definitely, there's a synergy that we can tap on. So we are going to expand our basis to have those users and encourage new users. However, we need those users not just from just viewing, but to actively be engaged. And that basis is log-in. So from the perspective of users, just simple viewing of content, that's passive viewing. So in order to make sure that they become more active, we have to have something for them. But for us, transferring our regular users to log-in users, that's easier, slightly easier than attracting new users because they were here once, and they had -- they participated here. So we have those already in pool that we can transfer to log-in users. Yes. So you're going to do some cool things.
Unknown Attendee
attendeeNext question is from Meritz Securities.
Dong-hee Kim
analystMy name is Kim Dong-hee. We have election, Olympics and many other events slated for this year. How is this going to impact your business? And how are you preparing for these events?
Chan-Yong Jung
executiveWell, we have events every year. Sometimes Olympics could be something that we had intended for, but it doesn't work out. Sometimes we didn't intend for, but we have like an exclusivity or something like that. Now election takes place every 4 years in Korea. It's a big issue. I am sure that these events will have an impact to our business. And I mean impact by positive impact. So like I said earlier, we want to have new users come in, and we have to make sure when they come in, there are elements to keep them stay. And we'll try to utilize and leverage these great events.
Joon-Sung Kim
executiveAnd just to add to it, we had World Cup before, and there were many users. But I will tell you, to be honest with you, the retention rate was very low. One of that is because we didn't have the recommendation system or the VOD. It wasn't good enough as it is now. And although it wasn't, right now, we have great systems for VOD, so I believe the retention rate may go up this year and going forward. Yes, we look forward to the events like that.
Unknown Attendee
attendee[indiscernible] Securities. I have a question about gift economy, gifts. Except for BJs of visible radio, other BJs depend more and more on YouTube ad rather than gift economy as they become more famous. I think that will harm the gift revenue in the long run. What are your comments -- to our CEO?
Chan-Yong Jung
executiveWell, I can't deny that it's not happening. But still, just like the Pareto principle, in YouTube, we have profitable creators and not so profitable creators, and in AfreecaTV, too. BJs have different source of income, right? And where does that major source of income comes from? That's different case-by-case. However, YouTube is on the rise and their ad volume is -- advertisement volume is basically on the rise. So what if that's -- that takes even bigger momentum? I think that's his question. Well, we have to focus on our gift economy. We have to expand gift economy. So for example, for Star Balloon storytelling, what was that, the 50 Star Balloons? So those star -- storytelling using Star Balloons, that's also taking shape, and OGQ market is collaborating with emojis. So we have those emojis made with OGQ. So we have to make those upgrades so that we can have some influence -- we can wield some influence in the VOD market. Who makes the most profit out of VOD? How much -- I think it's like several million won. Either 5 or -- yes, less than KRW 10 million. So those people -- they -- since it's a good source of income, they focus on VOD, and that's a good cycle. How about you [indiscernible] in terms of your source of income? What's your personal business model? How many business models do you have?
Unknown Attendee
attendeeWell, my major source of income is AfreecaTV, and I used to do YouTube, but I stopped doing YouTube recently. I thought I need to get organized, and I feel like I'm kind of all over the places. So I want -- just like I'm doing book contents in AfreecaTV, I kind of want to renew myself, renew my contents. So I need to take my time. But right now, I'm focusing mostly on this platform. But for me, YouTube, I was never profitable on that platform because of the editing costs. Yes, the editing cost is there. So...
Chan-Yong Jung
executiveYes. So listening to BJ -- other BJs, I heard it's not so easy to make profit on YouTube. Yes, so how many subscribers do you have?
Unknown Attendee
attendeeI have 37,000, not so many. But what's interesting is that on my page, if you look at the statistics, I think it's the same thing for other BJs, but there was -- out of the viewers, there are so many non-subscribers. Okay. We have a question here.
Incheol Yu
analystI'm from Citi Securities. My name is Yu Incheol. You now have the user point or the reward scheme. Can you tell me where these points can be used and when this will be fixated? And also, I would like to know the log-in user portion this year and mid-term, long term and also paying a ratio this year, long-term targets? And also I want to thank you for the 10 Star Balloons from my -- from the previous person.
Chan-Yong Jung
executiveYes, user point scheme was introduced, and we now have another system called token. And the points can now be -- can -- will be redeemed as coin -- as tokens. We want to do that by the first Q of this year, maybe a few weeks later than we hope to see that happen. Points will be used to buy goods in AfreecaTV or could be used at the PC room or food and beverages. And that will be the very basis. And besides that, the places -- we want to expand the places where you can use the tokens or the points. Well, points are seen as debt in our financial statements, so we want to be cautious here. Now as for the places where you can use the points if it doesn't mean anything if it's not meaningful to our users, it's useless. So we want to be very, very careful. Now for the log-in user portion, the target you asked, right? We have about 60% of non-log-in users. Meaning, more than half of the traffic at AfreecaTV is the non-logged-in user. What was our target previously? I think I mentioned that, increased by 10%, right? I said that before. So minimum 10% growth is the target for this year. Mid- to long-term target? Well, for the online and mobile platform, the log-in user 50% I personally think is very, very high. Also, the other 50% that are not logged in means it's a huge opportunity. It's a great challenge that I want to overcome. It's a great challenge -- opportunity. So I believe with the more traffic, I hope to be able to see more logged-in user portion.
Unknown Attendee
attendeeThis is a question for you, Gene. How is the coliseum being operated? How different is it from FreecUP Studio? And why did you decide to build your own stadium?
Joon-Sung Kim
executiveSo as per our coliseum, last year, we had PUBG Korea. We used something else. It was not our stadium. So we set everything up, and we dismantled everything and then you have to set everything up again. So we had so much cost, not just money but also all the efforts by our employees were all just going down the drain. So -- and our eSports itself was expanding, too. So we really felt that we needed our own studio -- our own stadium. As they know, we have a FreecUP Studio and we do LCK challengers league or ASL, GSL. These are being held at the studio. So in the studio, the seats are not so -- not too big. So for our young eSports fans, we wanted to make sure that they can go somewhere, be accessible to them with high capacity so that many people can come and be comfortable in it. We put a lot of thoughts into it. And then the timing was right. So in Jamsil, we found an opportunity. We thought we should never let go of this opportunity. And also, I know that our investors don't like any short term. So we made a long-term, 5-year long contract, so the cost was not so big. Of course, we have CapEx in the beginning because we have to make the eSports stadium inside. However, everything is done, we are ready, and that's why we decided to make our own. Well, there, not just eSports, but also just like FreecUP Studios can host other content creation, we can definitely do such activities in coliseum. It will be a bigger and more fantastic stage for our BJs. Yes, so I think BJs can definitely use that space. Making our own eSports stadium and owning it.
Chan-Yong Jung
executiveWe thought about owning it. That was my opinion. And our shareholders and investors -- well, we shouldn't make any hasty decision. So Gene had all the decision-making power, so that was the decision. But I'm certain that eSports industry will expand even further. And again, category takes up 50% -- more than 50% of our one-person media platform. So this category is something that we definitely should focus on. Yes, all around the world, eSports is really popular.
Unknown Attendee
attendeeAnother question from [indiscernible] Securities. I see that investors' money is being spent a lot on eSports business. Could there be another business model to produce revenue other than just from traffic growth?
Chan-Yong Jung
executiveGene, what do you think?
Joon-Sung Kim
executiveWell, this has to do with one of the unique competencies of AfreecaTV because, to be honest with you, many eSports companies or teams are in the red. But despite the situation, if you look at CK, there is the official channel, but our BJs also have their own channels. That means our BJs can receive the Star Balloons. That means we have a strong ecosystem because of the gift economy and as revenue. So compared to other platforms, AfreecaTV has its own competence, own strength based on this gift economy. So that's our unique business model. And honestly speaking, that's why we've been doing so well. And BJs are also relieving the stress from creating the content because we're already providing them with quite a lot. So it's not just a game or the ads, there's a gift economy and alpha we're providing to -- all these to the BJs making AfreecaTV platform more stable, more solid and more income-generating for our BJs. Well, as I think the question had to do with areas other than the traffic, right, and then that answer will be ads, of course, because if you look at eSports industry, we are a platform business. So ads is going to -- ads are going to go all the way to the hottest spot. If you look at America, what's the name? The Super Bowl? You know the Super Bowl. The ads that are going to run in the Super Bowl are chosen because they believe Super Bowl is the hottest in the year. Same thing in Korea. The ads will be concentrated on an area that's hottest, and we already have the entire value chain for that. So I think we'll see the impact very soon.
Chan-Yong Jung
executiveThank you so much for the Star Balloons. Somehow, we're receiving so many this time than previous times. I just received 100 Star Balloons. Thank you very much. Do we know why we're receiving so many just today? I guess they are encouraging us to do better this year. Are they the analysts?
Unknown Attendee
attendeeI would have to check their IPs because the regular users can come. They can watch this, but they are not allowed to ask questions, so they can send the Star Balloons.
Chan-Yong Jung
executiveAll right. Is it -- are they sending it because we have a new BJ, [indiscernible]?
Unknown Attendee
attendeeI don't know. Maybe that's why. Well, we want to thank you very much for all these Star Balloons from our users. Shall we continue a bit more or transfer this year's business?
Kim Jiyeon
executiveRight. I can do that. Yes, I mean, it's a good timing to cover the whole year 2020. I'm really focusing on what we do well, media platform business. That will be our core business and our basis, and then we're going to expand on it. That's my objective. So the industry itself is in a fledgling stage, so there's definitely room for growth.
Chan-Yong Jung
executiveLast year, at the BJ awards, I made a speech and I talked about some business keywords. And one of them is engagement. Engagement was one of those keywords. So it's engaging our users. In order to do so, we have to have our doors open. So we have to -- so I said I'm going to restructure our platform to open API. They sometimes use open API. But to explain this -- so for example, TJ Media, we have a partnership on Korean Karaoke. So around the nation, if we go into their Korean Karaoke, you just put 1 button and then AfreecaTV will run. So open API, you just add it. You don't need any development. You open your API, then you become more accessible to other partners for other partnerships. So I thought AfreecaTV, our one-person media platform, should be more used in everyday life, and that's something that we have opportunities. So for that, we can make our open API so that we can have more partnerships. And we have active BJs, at least 10,000 BJs. And we cannot customize everything for each and every BJ. That's not possible. But however, for any BJs who are willing and are smart and who are capable, they can definitely add on those functions. We will support them in this way. And -- so I've been talking about our platform. So I'm going to talk about the user. So we're going to do the user compensation scheme and also partly the audio service. I mean out of all the contents, like uploaded contents or replay contents, User Clip, it's kind of too short. But anyway, there are many contents that are valuable for audio. So your contents can be planted on our audio platform. In Korea, podcast service focuses mainly on current affairs and terrestrial. So that's the boundary that's been set, and I think we can definitely expand that boundary. In the audio and video spheres, these 2 are slightly different, but we can build a bridge between those 2 and then we can expand those scopes on both sides to create synergy. And eSports, again, we have -- that's one of our big focus. And I think the 1/3 of the time has been already booked with PUBG. We're going to use 2 studios. I think FreecUP's operation rate was almost 90%. So that's our target for this year also. With that kind of operation rate, then perhaps, profit-wise, it may not be so helpful. But in the long run, it will be very beneficial.
Unknown Attendee
attendeeA question from eBest. What is the strategy for this year's ads business? Any changes from the year before?
Chan-Yong Jung
executiveWell, 2 years back, we had the revenues of ads of KRW 19.8 billion, I believe, and we had an interview about this time last year. And we said, as a media platform, if you look at the potential, of course, ads is bigger than the gift economy. Then they said, what is the potential for the ads? And I said, "Right now, we stand around KRW 18 billion. This could be KRW 30 billion, KRW 100 billion. And if you look at 2000 -- and they wrote an article saying, their target for -- AfreecaTV's target is KRW 30 billion. Well, actually, but happily, we recorded the ads revenue of about KRW 29 billion, so that's a big growth. But I'm not giving a specific number for the target. But I believe that ads market is definitely something with a big potential. In the past, AfreecaTV's ads business trend was as such. It was the platform that led the growth, platform ads. When we had 3 million people, the platform ads revenue grew very fast. But this is in relation to traffic, and we saw a drop in the traffic. And we're keeping it as is, and we're not seeing the opportunity to grow the traffic. So we now have the branded contents with the game companies. At first, we started with 3.5 billion and et cetera, and we expanded the branded contents, not just the game companies, we wanted to diversify the advertisers, and we did that. And it's like an alliance by partnership, PPL. We get a sponsorship on a specific ads. So that's an expansion that we have engaged. Now in the meantime, the platform ads revenue status. At the same time, the branded content section grew steadily. So I think that's a very meaningful result. I think the next step from here is the ads for BJs. So meaning, the BJs themselves are the commodities for the BJs or the topics for the BJs. So if we can start -- if we can incorporate all the platform ads, branded contents and BJ assets, that will be great. What are the platform? We have the SBS-AfreecaTV. That's a cable TV. We have the mobile. We have an online platform. So in the OTT platform, our contents can be used for other OTT. So if you use the multi-platform, I believe our strength as a media will be stronger in the future. Again, I have a very high expectation and high hope for the ads revenue, but I'm not going to share that number because then articles can used -- written in a way that I don't expect, but I do see a big room for growth in the advertise market. Yes, I have no doubt that your -- this will happen. Next question?
Unknown Attendee
attendee[indiscernible] Dividend pay on ratio seems decreased slightly comparing to last year. Can you elaborate on dividend payout policy?
Chan-Yong Jung
executive[indiscernible] to come up with policy for dividend payout. Well, I think it's going to -- we're going to have to take some time to come up with this year's policy. Well, the ratio went down from KRW 20 billion, KRW 33 billion, KRW 5 billion. That's the pattern. But we have the policy on absolute amount. But next year, we're going to have to set up the ratio. Our amount itself is not so small, right? As a company, that's growing. Our payout ratio is about 17%, but before, we gave out like 40%. So I mean that means we grew a lot since. And we internally talked about this, but we still have a lot of investments that we need to make. So if we have to increase the ratio itself, then our room for investment will be diminished. So that's not what we can do. I think yearly, 15% would be good, but definitely, we have to set up some rules to communicate better.

attendeeNext question from Yu Incheol of Citi Securities. Are you considering collaborating with VOD platforms of other countries?
Chan-Yong Jung
executiveWell, I'm surprised. How did you know? Right, we are considering, literally, but I wonder how this person knew. Can you -- what do you -- actually, I ask you a question, can you tell me how you even thought about asking this question? Well, I guess, this is coming from different perspective that our VOD business that we are working on, are you saying, collaborating with the foreign VOD platforms? Or is it not? There's a time lag, so I'm going to have to wait for him to respond.
Kim Jiyeon
executiveI think it's the former. Gene, what do you think?
Joon-Sung Kim
executiveI think this question is related to expanding to overseas countries. Yes, YouTube are very active and eSports is growing. Oh, I see, he's responding. He is talking about overseas expansion.
Chan-Yong Jung
executiveWell, yes, collaborating with the overseas VOD platform to expand the VOD in Korea is -- I don't think it's a good idea. Right now in Korea, there are no players that have strength in the overseas VOD. Now your question had to do with the overseas expansion. In that case, it's the local strategy and the VOD strategy. I know we've been very -- we have not shown growth much on this area, but with the one build -- I think it's the Thailand, right? In Thailand, we are seeing the more -- profits being recorded. So this is the -- we now have the bilingual BJs, which means it's not completely independently just the profit coming from overseas expansion. But for overseas services, I think what's most important should be the VOD. So if that is the key going forward, in that case, we probably need to collaborate with the foreign platforms as well.
Unknown Attendee
attendeeI may ask questions to Gene on -- in relation to this. Our earnings are pretty good. So cash reserve is also growing as I hear. Using cash reserve, do you have any plan for the M&A? That's my question.
Joon-Sung Kim
executiveWell, we have about KRW 86 billion cash in reserve, which is why we could give out the dividends and the treasury share. Well, like I mentioned, M&A is something that we always think about. But I haven't found a very fitting company to -- for the M&A purpose because M&A is a marriage that means we have to think a lot, and have to definitely expect to see the synergy if we want to do the M&A. And if we were to do the M&A, we have to get to -- get all the investors out and then say what -- why we're doing it. And we have to be confident in why we're doing M&A. That means we have to find the very fitting company to work with. Well, at this point, we're looking only, but we haven't found one. If you believe there is a good fit, please let us know.
Chan-Yong Jung
executiveWell, maybe you're not looking hard enough. Well, I thought, if Gene is not looking very hard enough for an M&A -- okay, I take that as an encouragement, I'll work harder. He's doing a lot of work on other areas. But I mean in terms of cash, maybe he doesn't think the cash reserve right now isn't big enough. Maybe that's why he's not moving on that area. Well, I think I'm on the ads or the platform or tech. I would like to have an M&A on those areas. But I guess we'll have to work harder to find a very good partner here.
Unknown Attendee
attendeeDo you have -- can you share any indices for VOD related indices and trend?
Chan-Yong Jung
executiveWell, VOD has been accumulated and also has been raised. So we are counting the number, but it's kind of difficult for us to disclose. Are you ashamed of that number? No. I can't say we are accurate on that. Well, I'm a little bit embarrassed to disclose.
Unknown Attendee
attendeeWell, the User Clip is on the rise, right?
Chan-Yong Jung
executiveYes, that's true.
Unknown Attendee
attendeeSo how about we can disclose some numbers on the VOD for the first half of next year? I mean we have to give them something, some information. What do you think?
Chan-Yong Jung
executiveWell, kind of make the promise now. Well, that's because we made a lot of efforts to make the foundation for the VOD service, and we will energize. We will vitalize this category. But I'm not saying that we're going to disclose the number because we are proud of the number, but by disclosing -- by promising you that we're going to disclose, we're going to motivate ourselves. Yes, I mean for the sake of transparency, we should. Yes, let's do that for the first half. Yes, let's do it. Well, since you are pouring a lot of efforts in it, so I'm sure that we'll come around as good results.
Unknown Attendee
attendeeI don't believe we -- actually, we received a lot of questions. If there are no further questions, maybe we can wrap up here. What time is it now? It's 11:26. So I think we spent about an hour here. Well, in that case, maybe last words from Mr. Jung, our CEO?
Joon-Sung Kim
executiveOkay. Closing remarks. Every time we have this conference call, I am very, very excited and I have huge commitment. And I want to show how committed I am to this. But this is an official place, so I may not be able to explain entirely what I'm thinking. But again, this industry is still growing, and we are at the very top. And I can tell you that instead -- on top of growing our ecosystem, we want to expand more services, and we will put utmost efforts. So please keep looking.
Chan-Yong Jung
executiveWell, for me, thank you very much, everyone, for being with us this morning. I know there was a slow -- a little bit of a slowdown last quarter, but as all of us mentioned, January already we're rebounding very well. So 2020, we will work hard and harder. And the eSports team, the PUBG team, Kart Rider team and the car team, we have all these teams. I hope that you will cheer for our teams. I have no doubt they'll do well this year.
Kim Jiyeon
executiveWell, these 2 mention a lot about businesses. So what I can tell you from the IR team is there are some areas that we weren't perfect, and I want to make sure that we grow and we enhance such as the governance. So we will make sure to listen to the investors and reflect all of that in our policies and all that.
Unknown Attendee
