Our webinar today is a panel discussion about a new HMI product from Rockwell Automation called FactoryTalk Optix. In our webinar today, we'll cover the features that make it different. We'll demonstrate some of those features. And we'll talk with some technical experts, Mark and Chris, about their experience with the product and their customers' experience trying it out and what they're seeing with this new platform. So some introductions today. My name is Su Burtch. I'm the Commercial Portfolio Manager for visualization software, which includes FactoryTalk Optix. I'll be the moderator today for our webinar.

executiveHi, everyone. My name is Mark Hobbs. I'm the Product Manager for FactoryTalk Optix. I've been developing both hardware and software HMI solutions here at Rockwell Automation for over 30 years now. And I look forward to sharing some of my experience with you all today.

I've been at Rockwell close to 5 years, with the last 1.5 years specifically focusing on UNICO and Optix. Previous to my time at Rockwell, I was a systems integrator for about 10 years in the water -- wastewater industry. And I'm very excited about the webinar today as well.

executiveAll right. So let's take a look at the agenda. First, we'll do an introduction to the product, what is FactoryTalk Optix and what can you generally expect from it. Then we'll get into some of the features. We'll talk about modern graphics, we'll look at design and operation collaboration and how remote operations works with Optix. And then we'll take a look at some of the open extensibility and connectivity options.

executiveSo to start out, for those webinar attendees who haven't heard much about Optix, let's dive in with an introduction. So Mark, would you like to give us an introduction to Optix?
Mark Hobbs
executiveYes Su, I would. So FactoryTalk Optix is a new HMI offering that we just added to our visualization portfolio late last year. We've released the product in December. It is a new addition to our portfolio. It doesn't replace any of our existing products, but it offers many new capabilities that we're excited about and we'll be highlighting for you today. The development itself has been a collaboration between Rockwell Automation and ASEM. ASEM is an incredible company, Italian-based company that we acquired a couple of years ago, and we've been working with them ever since. That's important to know because I can give you a little bit of history. FactoryTalk Optix is based on a product called the UNICO, as Chris referenced in his introduction. UNICO was developed and released by ASEM. It's now FactoryTalk Optix. And the goal for UNICO was to develop a new revolutionary software platform that can be used not only for traditional HMI, but also has the capabilities to address newer IoT and Industry 4.0 applications. So while FactoryTalk Optix might be a brand-new product to Rockwell, it is based off of UNICO. So you'll see today that it is already a full-featured product, and it's been deployed and successfully used by many customers as part of the UNICO product and now today with FactoryTalk Optix. So what makes FactoryTalk Optix unique as it is an open, scalable and very flexible visualization platform. It can be easily extended at both design time and runtime. And it has a lot of different options available to connect to devices, whether that's controllers, smart devices, machines or even business systems. And we'll be talking a little bit more about that as we proceed here today. You can also see from the graphic on the screen that FactoryTalk Optix is our first cloud-based HMI offering within our portfolio. So that means that FactoryTalk Optix is available on demand whenever you need it by simply going to our FactoryTalk hub and logging in. You'll find FactoryTalk Optix in the design hub along with some of our other design packages such as Design Studio and Twin Studio. But from there, it's very easy to start up Optix. You can run it in the cloud using nothing more than a web browser. So in this scenario, there's no software needed to install or maintain.

executiveSo I guess I'll point out here. You can get to FactoryTalk hub by just going to your browser and typing in factorytalkhub.com, log in, and you'll be able to see all these different products?
Mark Hobbs
executiveYes. And you log in with your Rockwell Automation ID. So that's also very, very easy. So this slide has a little bit more detail on it. It's a slide that I can use today to kind of introduce you to the main system components that make up FactoryTalk Optix as well as the general workflow for designing, deploying and running your applications. It starts with Item #1 on the screen and that's FactoryTalk Optix Studio. It's our integrated design environment. It's what's used to create FactoryTalk Optix projects and applications. Now what we're showing on the screen currently is, what we call, Factory Optix Studio Standard. And the nice thing about Optix Studio Standard is that there is nothing to purchase. You simply go to our website, download the software to your local computer which is free, install it and go. So that will allow you to use Optix in, what we call, our design editor and it gives you access to all of the Optix features so that you can create your projects using the desktop editor. Once you've created your project, the next component is turning that into or creating a FactoryTalk Optix application. That's nothing more than a compiled version of the project that can easily be deployed and run on a device. Now that FactoryTalk Optix application includes not only the project data, but the runtime modules necessary to run the application and one of the unique capabilities of Optix is that we only include the runtime modules that are required to run what was configured in the project and that allows us to optimize the application to its smallest footprint possible, so it can run on a wide variety of devices that we'll be covering a little bit later. But once you have that Optix application developed, then it's just a matter of deploying it from the desktop editor over your local network to any Optix device and then running it on the device. Now we do have another version of Optix available or another license, if you will. It's the Optix Studio Pro version. So this is something that you need to purchase and it enables some additional Optix capabilities. As you can see here with the Pro license, that's the license that's required to run Optix in the cloud through the FactoryTalk Hub, as I described earlier. It allows you to deploy -- to remote devices from cloud to the device. That's done through our FactoryTalk remote access product by -- through a VPN connection. And the Pro license also enables other design features such as version control, multiuser collaboration and other future capabilities. So then lastly, with the introduction, FactoryTalk Optix is a very feature-rich project -- product, I'm sorry. There's lots of options available for you to design, deploy, create your graphics and extend Optix. I'm not going to go into a lot of detail on these right now as we'll be covering them as we move forward.

executiveThanks, Mark. I think that's a great introduction of all the pieces and parts of Optix, kind of what it is and what it's about. Chris, I'd like to ask you a question. You talk with customers every day. And I know the term modern HMI comes up. What do you think, what are your customers telling you that they're looking for in a modern HMI today?
Chris Gregory
executiveYes. Su, you're right. Working with customers, I am getting a lot of feedback. For the modern HMI, the #1 thing I'm hearing right off the bat is scalable graphics. Everybody wants to have some sort of vector-based graphics for their application. They want something that's fully extensible as well. We think we handle that pretty well in Optix with the C-Sharp and the NetLogics. They also talk about device in OS-agnostic. So they want something that's going to run on anything, right? Linux, Windows, anything, any kind of hardware they can find, they wanted to run on it. Compatibility with third-party devices, so OPC UA compatibility, which Optix is built on that OPC UA companion spec. And then lastly, collaboration. They want to be able to collaborate with users all across the world and/or their customers.

executiveGreat. I mean, that pretty much sums up, I think, what Optix is all about. So let's go a little deeper on some of the features that Chris mentioned and some of the things that are in Optix. Mark, one of the things that Chris first mentioned was scalable modern graphics in an HMI. So I think that's a key requirement. Can you tell us a little bit about the graphic options in FactoryTalk Optix?
Mark Hobbs
executiveYes. And first of all, Optix is an HMI or a visualization product at heart. So I absolutely agree with the comments from both Chris and you, Su. And I think with Optix, we address that very well because Optix supports both modern graphics and responsive displays. The idea behind Optix is that you can create a project or you can create a display once and maintain it in one place, but run it anywhere where it needs to run. And in order to achieve that, as Chris mentioned, all of the graphics within Optix are scalable vector graphics, so they'll size themselves automatically, either larger or smaller depending on the client that they're running on and they'll look good at any size. And then we're going to be sharing with you today different mechanisms or tools that are available in the Optix to create responsive objects and responsive displays. And what we mean by that is that you can create a screen or a display that automatically adapts to the form factor and resolution of the -- again, the client device that it's running on. And in fact, as you develop screens in Optix, there's basically 2 clients that they can run in, a local or a native client that's typically used on the box. Those screens can also be rendered in an HTML5 client, and that's very useful for mobile devices, remote users who are connecting to the system, remotely using their web browser or maybe a tablet type of device. And then Chris, also, in addition to having the modern graphics, I think it's important that we make it easy for our users to create screens with these graphics. So in order to accomplish that, we have an extensive library built right in Optix. It has literally hundreds and hundreds of predefined graphical objects, widgets, face plates, things that can be pulled right out of the library, all scalable, dropped into a container and used within the project without having to do a lot of development work. And then as users start to use these objects and compile them into their own graphics and their own reusable objects, we also support user-defined libraries where you can create your own library and store your own graphics in that library.

executiveSo Chris, I think you had commented to me that these libraries are real important for your customers. How do you see them using the libraries? Or how are you using the libraries?
Chris Gregory
executiveYes. Sue, we're actually both really internally here at Rockwell and my team and my extended team, we use these libraries all the time, not only for changes locally, but for the multiuser collaboration. You can actually share these libraries just as you would share the project on the GitHub repository. So customers are using it the same way. They have users all over the country. They're creating these custom graphics, custom widgets that they want to reuse and nobody wants to send files anymore, right? We want one place where the files are at and updated, and it just really helps with this library management to accomplish that.

executiveAwesome. Tell us about the multi-language features, Mark?
Mark Hobbs
executiveYes. So again, in today's global role, it's very important that your Optix screens and graphics and interface overall can really be styled to the audience that's using Optix. And with Optix, each individual user of the system has their own locale associated with them. And when that user logs on to the system, there's a lot of things that you can do in Optix. For starters, all of the user-defined text in the application can be in multiple languages. And when a user logs in, you can switch all of the text using a different language for that user based on their language of choice. But in addition to just the text on the screen, there's a lot of other international settings that will automatically change for the user. We do automatic unit conversions for things like measurements, temperatures and the format of certain graphic objects like the date and time format and even the format of numeric objects. That translation of the user define text can be done either within Optix itself, the Optix Studio environment using a built-in translation editor. Of course, in many cases, you would like to do that translation outside of Optix. So there's an import export mechanism also available to do that translation of the text.

executiveGreat. And so what you're saying basically is it's not just the text translation, it's also going from Fahrenheit to Celsius, for example, that is automatically done by Optix.
Mark Hobbs
executiveYes, gallons to liters as well. And as I mentioned, any format for things like date and time and numeric formats can also change and convert automatically.
Susan Burtch
executiveVery nice. Tell us about style sheets and some of the things you can do with those?
Mark Hobbs
executiveYes. So style sheets are an Optix feature that can be used both at design time and runtime. So at design time, we have a default style sheet, but you can create and add your own as well. And what's nice about the style sheets is that as you place graphics into your Optix application, they'll adhere to the style sheet automatically. So if you have default properties that you want set on all of your geographics, for example, that can be done once in the style sheet and used everywhere. So it's a very effective mechanism to enforce standards within your projects. And then, of course, here, as you can see the graphic on the screen, it's another thing that you can do for the user. These style sheets are available at runtime. So here, we're just showing an example of how you can have a light style sheet or a dark style sheet based on user preference.

executiveAnd Chris, it's not just light and dark. How well are customers able to use style sheets?
Chris Gregory
executiveYes, Su, I've got a couple of examples. The first one would probably be for my OEM customers. They're able now to create one application for their end users and then really just create a special style sheet for that end user. So same application, different color scheme, different logo, maybe different shading, all of those different things that are built in the style sheet makes it much easier for an OEM-type customer to really differentiate the project with really not doing much more development. The second thing to kind of tie back into Mark with the login is -- a good example I had was a customer that based on the log in, the first shift operator, maybe they like the dark style sheet, whereas the second shift operator comes in and they prefer the light style sheet, that all can be changed in runtime via the login.

executiveGreat. So really, the look and feel of the same application can change based on customer requirements or just the environment that someone's in, if it's nighttime, dark out or light out...

executiveVery flexible.
Susan Burtch
executiveVery nice feature. And then I know we have a lot of built-in navigation options. Do you want to tell us about that, Mark?
Mark Hobbs
executiveYes. These are just some examples. Optix is very flexible in how you set up your user interface. And what we're showing on this screen is just some examples of the navigation styles that we have created where you either have your navigation across the top or perhaps on the sides and/or bottom of the interface.

executiveSpeaking of navigation, Mark has a demo he's going to share with us today about responsive graphics and screens. So you want to go ahead and share your screen, Mark?

executiveYes, we can see it now.
Mark Hobbs
executiveOkay. Perfect. So yes, Chris and I both today want to show you the actual software. Obviously, we don't have a lot of time, but we want to show you some short quick demos. And the first one that I wanted to do here is just to show you some of the graphics capabilities we just talked through and show you some examples of how you can create responsive screens or an interface in Optix. So I'm just running a very quick basic demo that I created here in our emulator. And Optix, again, as I said earlier, is very flexible in how you set up your interface. So in my example here today, I've got 3 containers that make up my user interface for Optix. I have a container for the bar across the top of the screen. Right now, it's just showing the Optix logo, but you could put any content that you want in the container. On the left-hand side, you can see that I have a container that's reserved for my navigation. And then in the main central part of my client, I've got a third container for showing graphics or screen information to the operator. And I've just got some base graphics that I pulled right out of our Optix library. So I've got a pie chart, a trend chart, what we call, our data grid on the screen and a histogram. The data that's being shown here is just static data. It's not important for the demo, so don't pay too much attention to that. But I wanted to size the client here and just show you some of the scalability that we talked about earlier. First of all, as Chris and I talked about, the graphics you can see here are all scalable vector graphics. So as I resize the client, my graphics are scaling up or down as they need to. Also, in terms of responsiveness, when you set up your screens and Optix, you can have graphics in Optix positioned relative to each other and/or relative to the parent container that they live in. And that's why, again, if I resize the client, you can see that the interface is smart enough to first get rid of any unused space that's part of the client before it starts making any of the graphics actually smaller for the operator. So there's a lot you can do there. And in my project here today, I took it one step further. And I actually have 3 layouts defined for my project; a large layout, which we've been using so far. But I also defined a medium layout and a small layout. And Optix gives me all of the capability to know what the current size of the client is. And then if you look in the bottom right-hand corner for this demo, we're just showing the pixel width and height of the client. And Optix gives me the capability when I reach a certain size to automatically change the layout. So the first breakpoint that I built into my application, I call them, breakpoint, occurs when the -- of the client is 1,000 pixels or less. So right now, I'm just above 1,000 pixels. But if I size it to anything below 1,000 pixels, you can see that I automatically changed the layout for my operator. Now I went to 2 containers instead of 3. I repositioned my menu across the top, so I could maximize space for the operator in terms of screen content. And then I created one more breakpoint in my application today that occurs when the width of the client would fall below 600 pixels. And in this case, again, I changed my navigation style to more of a hamburger style menu that I can open and close and it slides out when it's needed. And you can see that I also stacked the elements on my screen vertically with a scroll bar so that they're readable even when the client has a width below 600. Now in this example today, I'm obviously using the client like a control room operator would or an operator on the PC who has a mouse and a keyboard and is manually resizing the client. But I will get the same behavior if I download my project to different sized devices. So if I download my project to a computer with a full HD screen, I'm going to get my large layout as we see here. But if I download it to a smaller terminal device that doesn't have as large a screen, I would automatically get my midsized layout or on a very small device, maybe more of a mobile device or a tablet device that has a very thin but longer screen, I would automatically get the small layout. So just wanted to show you the graphics and show some of the responsive behavior that can be achieved in Optix.

executiveThat is a fantastic demo, Mark. Thank you very much. I think the next thing we're going to talk about is collaboration, design collaboration. So I guess there's a couple of features there that you wanted to highlight, Mark. So let's talk about those.
Mark Hobbs
executiveI did. I think over the last few years, we've all seen the need for collaboration really escalate and accelerate. And Optix can really help you improve collaboration within your teams and between your teams when they're either designing or maintaining an HMI system. And we want to share some of that information with you today. So for design collaboration, FactoryTalk Optix supports an integrated version control system or VCS that provides both multiuser collaboration and version control. So that means that multiple users can work on the same projects simultaneously and easily share content with each other. Those users can save and restore versions of their project using a central repository in order to track changes or keep track of who did what and when. Essentially, for our visualization users, everyone on the call here today, we're allowing you to leverage modern VCS concepts. We're using industry standard GitHub functionality on the back end. But we've done our own front end and put our own front end on the capabilities so that you don't have to be a VCS expert or even a software development engineer. And this is just an example of what a typical multiuser collaboration environment would look like with Optix. It starts by creating a central repository that's used to store the project. You can see in this example, we have a cloud-based repository that can be accessed from anywhere in the world. We're using GitHub as the provider of that repository but we'll support other providers as well, we'll support on-premise repositories in addition to cloud-based repositories. But once you have that set up, you can easily then have multiple users collaborating on the project simultaneously. And the general workflow is that if user 1 starts to -- wants to begin collaborating on the project, they simply connect to the repository, do what we refer to as a pull operation and then they'll get a local version of the copy of the project. They can work on the project independently of the other users when they're done with their task, they can push their change up to the repository for other users to pull in. So that's the general workflow for how this works.

executiveSo I think you and Chris are going to show us a demo of that multiuser collaboration with GitHub. So Chris, do you want to share your screen and start us off?

executiveYes. Yes, I'll give Mark a little break here. All right. Just let me know when you can see that.

executivePerfect. Okay. So as Mark was referring to earlier with the multi user collaboration, we're going to put together just a quick short and sweet demo for you guys, nothing too complicated, but we think it will show the features pretty well. So what you're looking at here is the design studio. I went ahead and created just a basic project. So just a little bit of the back story basic project. We also need to make sure that we're logged in to my Rockwell account at the top right corner here. Second thing we need to check is to make sure that you're logged into GitHub. So in the studio options, you can set your provider here and make sure you're logged in. So we've got a project. We have got GitHub logged in and then my Rockwell is logged in as well. So now I'm going to be using the top part of the tool bar up here for the collaboration tools. That is what's going to be utilized for this demo. So the first thing I'm going to do is just add something to the screen. I'm going to go ahead and just put in a label here. And put, I'll just say hi to Mark. Okay. Now that I've made a change, I actually need to commit that change. So I'm going to do a save and commit. This is -- this -- don't overlook this part. This is very important for the version control portion of the collaboration. Once the projects get large, there's a lot of changes, these messages are going to be very important. Instead of going in at a granular level and seeing the changes, being able to read these messages is really going to help you out. So I'm going to put initial push and added label. Okay. Hit go ahead and hit okay. Okay. Now that I've made that change and committed it, going to go ahead and configure my remote location. So I'm going to go to my GitHub and I'm going to -- I've set all this up, and I'm going to go ahead and go to my repositories, which is Optix webinar. I'm going to grab that URL, and I'm going to place it here. I've also went ahead on the repo and added Mark as a collaborator. I have to do that because I've added it as a private repository that was public, I wouldn't need to do that, but I did go ahead and do that. Okay. So project is now synchronized. It's been pushed up to that Git repository. And now I think I'm going to switch it back over to Mark to look at it from his end.

executiveAll right. Okay. Well, Chris has asked me to collaborate with him on this project today, and I am more than happy to do so. So let me show you how I can do that very quickly and very easily. First of all, just like Chris showed, you can see that I'm also logged in. If I go to the same options page that Chris showed, part of our FactoryTalk hub capability is that we can store your Git provider in the FactoryTalk Hub. And then as soon as you log into Optix, your Git identity is known and shown here. So my provider information is also here in known. And what that means is that in order to start working on the project with Chris, I'm using our start page interface that we have in Optix. I can just go to the open tab, I can go to the remote tab on the open page. And because my Git identity is known, the software is smart enough to provide me with a list of all the available repositories that I have available to me. Those include repositories that are in my own GitHub account but also in this case, Chris' GitHub account as well. And like he said, he made me a collaborator on the project. So that's why I see this. I don't really need to know what the URL is. I can just pick the Optix webinar project that Chris started. I can see the URL if I just want to confirm that it's correct. And then all I have to do is click the open button. And then you can see some messaging in the bottom right-hand corner here, it shows that Optix is now opening the project from the repository that Chris set up. And then once it does that, it will actually open within Optix. So I now have a local version of the project. Chris and I can continue to work independently. If I open the main window, you can see that I get all of the content that Chris recently pushed to the repository. So I have the screen here. I have the label he added. And what I want to do for just demonstration purposes is make 2 quick changes to the project. First of all, I'm going to select the label and just move it. So essentially making change to something that already existed in the project. Then I can open up our base controls and I'm just going to add a new object or little built-in LED object beside the label. Now that I've done that, I'm going to commit my change just like Chris did and then push it up to the repository so that he can access my change when he needs to. First of all, if you pay attention to the messaging in the bottom corner here, we always provide messaging on your local changes versus what's currently up on the remote repository. And because I just pushed -- pulled down the project, you can see that I'm currently synchronized. However, as soon as I commit my change, here's the commit message capability that Chris showed, so just put in a new message. Added LED, click okay. So that's getting committed now to my local repository. As soon as that is complete, you will see that the message changes and now tells me that, hey, I've made a local change that's available to push to the repository. And also, if you look at my icons in the tool bar, you can see that my push to remote icon also shows an indication that I actually have something to push. So I'll go ahead and do that with one click of the icon. And now my project is being saved to the remote repository. So that, again, Chris can access it when he needs to. And you can see that I'm now once again synchronized locally with the remote project. Before I turn things over to Chris though, I just wanted to show a couple of more things in the interface. I'm going to open up the version history, which I can do by just clicking the version history icon. And this allows you at any time, to go look at the versions, the history of the commits that have been done for the project. Now right now, we only have 2. So you can see that I can see the initial push that Chris did where he added the label, I can see who made the commit, I can see when it was made, and this little icon here indicates that it's a commit that has been pushed to the cloud versus just a local commit, which will also show up in this interface. And then there's the commit I just did to add the LED. And what's really nice here is that you can just select one of the versions of the project, and you get a nice graphical interface that will show you all of the changes that were done in this particular version or with this particular commit. You can see here that I changed the label object, so it shows up as a change that was made, and then there's the LED that I added. You can also select multiple versions and see the differences between particular versions. And then the third thing you can do is if you select a particular version, you can always use the Restore button to roll back changes to that particular version. But to save a little time here, I think I'm ready to give the desktop control back to Chris.

executiveOkay. Good. Okay. So as you guys can see here, same application, the verbiage has changed, like Mark referred to. Now I have some remote changes in the lower right-hand corner. And on my pull icon, I have the #1 signifying that there's a change. So I'm going to go ahead and pull that change. Okay. The project is now synchronized, going to go to our main screen. And I now see that the text has been moved in the added LED indicators there. The version control, just like Mark had showed, I won't go through it all again, but everything is there, including the left margin was moved from a location of 50 to 410 -- from 410 to 50, I apologize. So again, very granular level. I will mention, though, the restore that he talked about is very, very important. If for some reason, I did not like what he added in a very complex application, I could always go back to my initial push, restore to that point and then kind of blow away his changes. The best example I can give of this would be for those of you that are familiar with VMware, this should be similar to a snapshot functionality. Okay. That's all, Su, for the demo.

executiveAll right. Thank you. That's really great multiuser collaboration on the design side of the fence, right? I think a couple -- let's talk about a couple of new subjects. So first of all, different platforms. So obviously, there's a lot of options for deploying Optix. We've covered some of them already, but I think we'll get into a little bit more detail. And then also, as one of you mentioned earlier with the pandemic, being able to have remote connectivity to applications and to the plant floor has become really important. So let's talk about some of the deployment options and those remote operation features.

executiveOkay. Thanks, Su. From a deployment perspective, as we discussed earlier, you can see that you can deploy to any Optix device no matter where you are or what version of Optix you're using. So if you're using the desktop version, you can deploy the devices locally. If you're using Optix in the cloud in a web browser, through FactoryTalk remote access, again, you can establish a VPN connection with the device and deploy from cloud right down to the device. And then speaking of devices, we haven't touched on this too much in the webinar so far. But Optix supports the ability to deploy to a wide variety of device types and sizes. So we will support dedicated type panels, which we call, Optix panels. You can deploy your project to a station PC that can be used locally by the operator or you can have web clients that can connect to that station to provide some distributed or remote access capability. So Optix is truly cross-platform. We support ARM and X86 architectures. We support both Linux and Windows operating systems. And just as a reminder, as I talked earlier, our deployment is also scalable so that we only deploy what's needed by the application, and that's one of the critical things that allows us to support such a wide variety of devices.

executiveAnd then, Chris, do you want to tell us a little bit about the platforms that Rockwell has for Optix?
Chris Gregory
executiveYes. So you guys are probably wondering today, what do we offer at Rockwell FactoryTalk Optix. So this slide shows the ASEM 6300 family of hardware, PC hardware wide ranging from the small general mounted micro PCs, the book mount PCs, panel mounted touchscreen PCs, and then we also have the Wall Mount Box PCs. On the panel side, the Optix panel, I haven't seen a lot of questions come in on the chat about it, but this is the Optix panel. This is the all-in-one terminal. It's ready to run, right out of the box. It is built for FactoryTalk Optix. It even comes with FactoryTalk remote access as well. Again, it's all in one. It's cost effective because of that ARM architecture, significantly reduces the price over an X86, and it's secure. It's closed. It's a lockdown Linux operating system. Yes, so that is the Optix panel that's currently being in production.

executiveYes. And that we're looking for Optix panel to come out probably in the next couple of months. So you can find those near -- the distributor near you, right? So Chris, you might tell us about the deployment options for Optix?
Chris Gregory
executiveSure. So we've talked about what it can run on. Now we're going to talk about kind of the how and there's 3 different parts to that. There's the emulator, which Mark and I have both been using for these demos, that runs the application local on the hardware that you're actually running the design environment. So much like a test application for those of you for ME and SE. Again, just locally on that design machine. The local device allows you to push the application to any hardware on your local network that has the runtime tools installed. So this could be a VM, this could be a PC on the network, really anything. So local device, that is what that's for. The remote device, this is the one that includes the FactoryTalk remote access. So anything that is included in your organization or organizations that belongs to those organizations on the hub, you can reach those. So if I've got a device at a customer site, I belong to that organization, the connection is made, I can simply push my project through FactoryTalk remote access and VPN connection out to the customer site.

executiveAll right. So that covers a lot of the deployment. Mark, do you want to give us kind of the scenario of how operators can also use Optix to collaborate?
Mark Hobbs
executiveYes. Absolutely, Su. And I'm watching the clock here, so I'm going to be brief so that we also have time for our last topic. But this is an example of how FactoryTalk Optix and remote access can be used together because they are integrated together. So in this collaboration scenario, we've got a local operator who is running the machine, sees a problem and needs remote assistance. So right from our HMI, they can make a request for remote assistance, putting in their name, contact information and a description of the problem. That assistance request can be received by a remote maintenance engineer using our FactoryTalk Remote Access solution. They see the contact information when they receive the request. And then, Su, if you go to the next slide, that remote maintenance engineer has a variety of different tools available to them to remotely troubleshoot and identify the problem and eventually fix it. And this slide only talks about a few of them. But again, through remote access, they can establish a VPN connection to the local machine, so that they can interact with the machine remotely, do whatever they need to do. They can also start a chat session with the local operator if needed, and they can chat together to help resolve the situation, and eventually using these tools, the remote maintenance engineer can identify what needs to be fixed. As Chris mentioned, with the remote deployment, if there's any updates to the HMI or the controller programming or to the machine in general, that can be done remotely through FactoryTalk remote access. Eventually, the situation can be resolved. The maintenance engineer can close the assistance request, the local operator will see that and can continue with just normal machine operation.

executiveGreat, Mark. So the collaboration really is both in the design side and on the runtime operations side?

executiveAbsolutely.

executiveSo our last topic today is open extensibility and connectivity. So I think, Chris, you were going to tell us some -- about some of these features and give us our last demo.

executiveYes. So extensibility really comes down to in Optix, the Open API and our C-Sharp programming. So bits of C-Sharp script, in Optix, we refer to those as NetLogics. Those NetLogics can be either design time -- running the design time or running the runtime. This makes it very extensible. If there's something not in the product or something the product doesn't do natively, it's fully open, you can go in there and do as much damage as you want. I have a good customer example of this. A customer actually built their entire application with C-Sharp scripts, design time script that would go out, look at the processor, determine what type of screens to make, how many -- pretty impressive stuff. So again, that's very, very extensible, and very, very powerful, a great tool to have. Next slide, just quickly talking about the wide range of connection options in Optix. We obviously can connect to our Rockwell processors natively. We also have MQTT natively in the product, HTTPS. We've talked a couple of times about OPC UA protocols, how the product was built on those protocols. We can actually be an OPC UA server and/or client with the product. And then here's a good list of just the native third-party controllers or control communications that we can make. It might be hard to see on the screen, but we've got everything from Modbus to CODESYS, down to TwinCAT. So again, very, very wide breadth of communication devices that we can talk to in protocols.

executiveAll right. And that brings us to our final demo today. Chris, you're going to show us a little OPC UA demo, right?

executiveCorrect. I have to share my screen again here.

executiveAnd we just about can see it. Yes.

executiveOkay. Great. So I'm going to be showing 2 different Optix applications. The first one that you're looking at now is the features demo. It's going to act as the OPC UA server. And then the second Optix is going to be the client, the OPC UA client. So quickly, I'll just show you the configuration just to show you kind of how easy it is. And then I'll kind of show you in runtime how it reacts. So we're looking now at the features demo in the OPC UA settings in the project view. You'll see there is an OPC UA server. Really, the only thing I'm worried about here is this endpoint URL. This endpoint URL is going to be used on the client side as well. So there are some alarms configured in here as well that I'm going to be showing passing back and forth and those were configured ahead of time. So I'm going to switch over to the other application. Go down to OPC UA client. And you'll see here that the same server endpoint is put into that property. Now I mentioned that we're going to be looking at alarms. There are a couple of other options. You can actually look at nothing. You can look at all the events and alarms or just alarms. So again, really just setting the server endpoint URL and then this events, drop down on the client is really the only configuration that I've done to make this work. So let's go ahead and start the applications. Some going to be using a local emulator here, which we talked about a little earlier. So I've got my OPC UA server, I'm going to be using the long page here, switch back to my other application and start a its emulator. Okay. Now that I've got both applications, I'm going to try to fit them on the screen as best as I can here. So we've just got some variables here, internal variables that are set to trigger alarms. I'm going to go ahead and turn the voltage alarm on. You'll notice here on the server, it comes through, everything looks good. You also notice on the client side, it actually came through as well. I'm going to go ahead and turn it off the voltage alarm and acknowledge it, and confirm it, and you'll see that it is removed as well from the client side. So now I'm going to do the pressure alarm, slightly different. I'm going to go ahead and turn it off. You'll see it's still not being acknowledged or confirmed. So it's still showing up on the client side. And from the client side, I'm going to go ahead and acknowledge and confirm that alarm. It has now been taken off the server side as well. So again, hopefully, this shows you guys just how easy the OPC UA connection is to use in Optix.

executiveYes. Thanks, Chris. That's a very simple way to show a very powerful feature. So I think -- I've seen a lot of questions in the chat about how do I get started? How can I learn more? So I thought we'd cover a couple of things for you to take away. And then we have a few minutes, I think, for some questions. So first of all, you can try FactoryTalk Optix now. I put a QR code here. You can scan that and go right to our FactoryTalk Optix web page. From there, there is a link at the top to try it now. A couple of things you need to know. Where you're going to try it now is FactoryTalk Hub. So we mentioned that earlier, FactoryTalk Hub is Rockwell's Cloud platform. So you'll need to use your My Rockwell Login that will get you into FactoryTalk Hub. From there, you create an organization if you don't have one already on FactoryTalk Hub for your company. Once you have an organization, you'll see all the different titles for the different cloud-based products. There's a FactoryTalk Optix tile there, get in there, and you have 2 options. You can download, as Mark presented earlier, the Optix Studio environment. You can download that for free, bring it to your computer, you can sell it locally and off you go, you can go ahead and try to recreate some of the things that Mark and Chris showed you today or just do your own playing. There's also a web version of the Optix Studio. For that, there's a button there that says request access, and we'll let you in. So you can get started today, you can get started at no cost and start to get a feel for what Optix is. There is also some other information that I thought would be helpful for -- if you want to see, okay, I want more, I want to see more demos, I want to see more of what the features kind of look like. How do I actually get started? How do I create my first screen? There is a playlist for Optix on our YouTube channel. And I've included a link here. I believe the handouts should include later a link to these slides and you'll get a link to our playlist. But a lot of videos there, if you just search for Optix, FactoryTalk Optix on YouTube, you'll find it. Also in the knowledge base. So if you have a -- you do need a log in, you need to have My Rockwell account, but when you log into our knowledge base, we have a lot of aids that are there to help you get started, learn and troubleshoot what you're trying to do with FactoryTalk Optix. So with that, we have just a couple of minutes. We'll bring Paul in. Are there some questions, Paul, that people would like answered?

executiveAbsolutely. Thank you, Su. There is one question around someone that uses global objects today, what would be the equivalent to it, how would they do global objects with Optix, I think we covered that one quickly. If somebody wants to take that question, please?
Mark Hobbs
executiveYes, I can start, and Chris, feel free to chime in. There's a number of ways to do that in Optix. So Optix is very object oriented. So you can create your own face plate or a motor widget object. You can have a type for that object and then you can instance that object multiple times within your project. And then if you make modifications to the type, those changes are propagated to all instances. The other thing that Optix has is an alias feature. So if you're creating a global object or a widget or a face plate in Optix and you want to tie that to a structure that you defined in the controller, you would use that alias feature to accomplish that. So that, again, every time you instance the object, you can just change the instance of the controller structure that it's pointing to with essentially one tag reference.

executiveThank you, Mark. Can an Optix runtime be ran on any PC? And what is the dedicated version to be able to runthis? That question is coming in several ways. Can I deploy an Optix application on the PanelView Plus Terminal? Can I deploy it on a PanelView 5000 Terminal? Can we just hammer that question and clarify all the target devices that are supported with an Optix runtime, please?
Mark Hobbs
executiveYes. So in terms of our existing panel view offerings, you will not be able to run Optix on those platforms. But as Chris showed you, we are coming up with a new dedicated panel offering optimized for Optix called the Optix Panels. So that's what you would use for that type of device. But then as we also talked about Optix is truly cross-platform. So it can run on Linux, it can run on Windows, it can run on Rockwell Automation hardware, and you can also purchase your own third-party hardware to just run the Optix software on. It can run in a docker container, a very, very flexible. Chris, anything to add there from your perspective?

executiveNo, that was perfect. It's -- think of the Optix Panel for Optix as you would a PanelView for ME, right? It's built just specifically for that product, yes, but other than that, you could cover it all.
